If the Phone Doesn’t Ring, It’s Me

2631563933.jpg  I know that I’m not any good at hoops, but I’ve spent a lot of time this year shooting hoops, which almost anyone can do in your spare time. I read a lot, and I shoot a lot of jumpers. I like to play games of pig and horse, which I don’t always win, but I work on my 2-10 ft. game. About 6 years ago I was a major player in the pig/horse scene, but it takes practice, and over the next few years, I wasn’t putting in the time, and getting beat too often. So, I took several years off, placing myself in pig/horse retirement, and just shooting around here and there for fun. But this year, I’m mounting a comeback.

And yesterday, just for the fun of it, I took about 20 minutes just to shoot around, and then something popped into my head. I remember my senior year in high school, I made a bet (or wanted to make a bet) with my oldest brother Anthony. He probably doesn’t remember, but I do. Some friends and I would shoot hoops, play some half court at this goal known as the “sewer goal”. It had a small creek that led to some sewege drains, thus its name. Anyhow, I had played on this court for about 1o years. I liked to shoot with my pizza hut outdoor ball, with the Big 8 teams and logos on it. Yet another of my mom’s many “collecters items” purchases. Anyhow, when I was by myself, I would chuck a bunch of 3’s, shots that I would really never take in games. But from the top of the key, I was deadly. Your are perfectly lined up, squared up, and wide open. Easier than a free throw I think. One day I was hot, and I probably shot about 50 or so, made over half. I told my brother that I would bet him I could make 40 or more from the top of the key out of 100.

For whatever reason, the bet never materialized, and I never attempted to do it on my own. For good reason too, since not many rims out there could take the sort of punishment I’m capable of delivering. If you didn’t get that, I just implied that I really can’t shoot that well. But yesterday, after warming up a bit (all shots from inside 3 pt. land) I said, ok, I’ll take 10 at a time, never taking more than 6-8 seconds to size the shot up, from the top of the key, 3 pt. land. I thought maybe I would shoot 20,maybe 30. But less than 30 minutes later, I had taken 100 shots, and made 60. Twice I hit 8 out of 10, and never made less than 4. Rounds of 4,7,5,8,6,8,5,4,6,7=60. With the bad back, it might help, I never really left the ground when I shot. So hoopsters, or even non-hoopsters like myself, if you are bored sometime next week, and happen to be in a gym…let ‘em fly.

  1. D.C. I bet you can’t make 20 in a row on that nerf hoop at work.
