If the Phone Doesn’t Ring, It’s Me

2879248608.jpg398525306.jpg The first day of December in Portland, a nice Saturday morning, offered a winter snow. Not anything drastic, since it was near 40 that day, so nothing stuck to the ground, but what a great way to start the month. I still don’t have a tv, but I’m getting used to it. I can still go to friends’ houses to watch games if necessary, but I haven’t seen a sitcom in over a month. I am super pumped that KU is going to the Orange Bowl(sorry Missouri fans, that’s the breaks). I was hoping for a Fiesta Bowl game, since my aunt and uncle live in Phoenix, I would have gone then, Miami will be too expensive. The Hawks in a BCS game, I’m so excited. We did watch them get beat my MU, but I still wasn’t deflated, because I just felt that if OU could beat MU, the BCS would come knocking.

I have spent a lot of time the last week reading the Bible. I read Matthew on Tues. and Wed., and now I’m reading Mark. On occassion it’s nice not to always be surrounded by people like I have been since I moved here. Since Aug, I have been on the go, trying to take this whole city in, which was fun, and there is so much to see and do, and I have met some great people. But a few weeks ago, I stepped back and thought to myself that I really hadn’t even had a chance to reflect on this whole trip. I’m trying to focus these next few weeks, until I come home, on analyzing my experience and what it has meant to me. But not only that, what it has meant to others. Without a doubt though, this has been nothing but positive and enjoyable for me. I still have on my agenda to attend a Blazers game, and probably an Oregon hoops game.

I tried last weekend to go to two separate vespers/holiday concerts at churches nearby. Both times I was shut down at the door. There had been a flyer that promoted all of the musical type of holiday progams this month. I thought that would be great, since the vespers concert at Baker University in Baldwin, Kansas is one of my favorite events each year, and I wanted to try and replace that. Both concerts were labeled as free. I thought that would be enough to get me in, and I didn’t bother to call the phone numbers or write the email addresses for further details. The first was Sat. Portland University choir. Apparently, they gave out tickets(which were free), but you had to get them in advance. It’s hard not to get angry when you planned on listening to some nice music, but then again it was at a church during christmas season, so I walked away. The next was local choirs, again at a church, on Sun. morning. This one was far from free; 25 for a ticket. I asked if they took donations, since I did have a 5 on me, and he said, “Well, we really don’t…” and before he finished, I just said, that’s ok, I’ll be back. I wanted him to say, “Sure, give us what you can.” I suppose that I was being selfish. It was raining, and I was soaked, so I sulked back to my car and went home, 0 for 2 on the weekend.

Another fun experience was Mon. evening. I deciced to get out for a bit, in the rain, and see a movie. I left a 5, so I had just missed the early shows at one theater, and for the next hour I tried 3 more theaters, having missed each of their earlier movies, and tempting me to stick around another hour or more to wait for the 7 or 8 shows. Walking in the cold rain, occasionaly stopping into a store to dry off my KU jacket that was keeping me dry. I failed yet again, as my last resort option around 6:30 was to watch the Bee Movie, or wait another 45 min. for American Gangster. Had my socks not been soaking wet, I might have waited 45 min., but instead I chalked it up as an experience it planning ahead when it’s raining in Portland, OR and you want to see a movie.

  3. Gone Baby Gone is a solid movie.

KU won by 18, and it wasn’t that close. Sweet Revenge.
