So it started nice, great weather in the am. I decided to go to the Sat. market at Portland St. I arrived a bit later than I had hoped, strolling in just past 11am rather than the anticipated 9:30. It’s amazing how many times I am willing to hit the snooze button. Not only that, but get up, hit the snooze, and then return to the slumber. Still, perhaps nothing will outperform my sophomore year in college when I managed to miss my 8am wakup call, yet maintain a consistent 9 minute snooze until 12:30pm, just in time for lunch, being harrassed by my roommates all the while. Imagine that. So anyhow, I did not want to rush to make any purchases, so I decided to take a few laps, and mark my booths for another time. I have made a list, and will not forget my backpack this time. Part of the problem was that I wanted to buy a lot of vegetables, and some other items such as bread and bison, but I didn’t have the means to carry them out. Keep in mind, bison meat, not an entire bison.
I did manage to drop off the dry cleaning before I went, and I had intended on purchasing some groceries. Yet again, I forgot my pack. So I went home and recharged. I had a granola bar and some water and headed out. I made a great meal for a late lunch/early dinner which consisted of 2 scrambled eggs, some broccoli(but I did not chop any broccoli-hopefully someone gets that), and sliced avacado. I’ll have to get a picture of it, because the presentation is at least an 8. But I certainly had to earn my meal on this occasion, which I didn’t get to enjoy until after the trip to the store.
Along the way to the store, I took a few more photos, and I think that I’ll get some of downtown at night as well later this week. Anyhow, I strolled about 2 miles headed towards what I thought would be my grocery destination, and it turned out that I had gone a mile or so too far west. So I took the roundabout way, no big deal. I spent a good while at the store when I finally found it, as it had been almost 3 weeks since I have arrived and had not purchased any food yet. Perhaps not thinking of the fact that I had another mile at least to travel home, some uphill, I bought as much as I could fit into the basket. Considering that I had put some miles in the morning, I was a bit more tired than I had thought. I packed the external frame pack(which I hadn’t seen one since my trip to the grand canyon this spring) and what could not fit, I carried. My back is still paying the price. There was at least 20-25 lbs. of food in there, plus another 15 that I was carrying. In my haste, I had forgotten to keep the eggs out to cary, but somehow they did not crack. Shells, aren’t they wonderful? At one point my back almost went into spasm, but I forged on. Around 600m to the house, I honestly thought that the trip to the grocery store was as tough as some points along the trail hiking the canyon. Maybe it was the morning cantelope that I had at the market talking, but I was honestly on my last leg. It all worked out, because I enjoyed that sweet meal just a half hour later.
